Early voting turnout in Cameron County has been strong ahead of the Nov. 3 general election, with election officials reporting participation approaching levels associated with presidential elections.
Nearly 26,000 ballots were cast during the first three days of early voting, according to KRGV.
By Oct. 26, more than 46,000 Cameron County residents had voted early, according to a subsequent KRGV report.
Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said participation was approaching presidential-election levels. The county recorded approximately 51,000 early votes during the 2022 midterm election.
Garza attributed the increased interest partly to the number of races and local contests.
Contested county races
Cameron County voters will choose a new county judge after three-term incumbent Eddie Treviño Jr. lost the May 26 Democratic primary runoff to Esteban "Steve" Guerra.
Guerra faces Republican Mauro Garza in the general election, according to MyRGV's election coverage.
Other county races include Commissioner Precinct 2, where Republican Jonathan Campos faces Democrat Joseph L. Lucio.
In Commissioner Precinct 4, incumbent Democrat Gus Ruiz faces Republican Oscar Guerra.
County clerk and county treasurer positions are also contested.
State legislative and statewide races
Republican state Rep. Janie Lopez is seeking another term in House District 37 against Democrat Oziel "Ozzie" Ochoa Jr.
In District 38, Democratic state Rep. Erin Elizabeth Gamez faces Republican Laura E. Cisneros. Both contests appear in the Texas Secretary of State's official candidate certification.
In the U.S. Senate race, Democratic state Rep. James Talarico faces Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton and Libertarian Ted Brown, according to the Texas Tribune.
Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is seeking another term against Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa.
Turnout draws attention
Cameron County is among the South Texas counties drawing attention for participation in the 2026 midterm election.
Garza told KRGV that the number of local contests was contributing to voter interest.
The Cameron County Elections Department publishes updated election and turnout reports, providing a continuing record of participation in the county.
