The county's preliminary election reconciliation counted 104,159 voters, including 101,520 who voted in person and 2,639 who voted by mail. The county had 244,901 registered voters.

Border counties see increased participation

Cameron County's increase was part of a broader shift along the Texas-Mexico border.

An analysis first reported by The Texas Tribune found that turnout across the state's 16 border counties increased by about 8 percentage points compared with 2022. Border counties had the largest increase among regions of Texas.

The analysis also found that Democratic candidates made substantial gains in counties that had supported Republican President Donald Trump in 2024.

Democrats carry Cameron County

In Cameron County, Democrat Gina Hinojosa received 68,531 votes in the governor's race, or 66.76% of ballots cast for that office. Republican incumbent Greg Abbott received 33,060 votes.

Democrat James Talarico also carried Cameron County in the U.S. Senate contest, receiving 69,724 votes, or 68.35%. Republican Ken Paxton received 30,505 votes, or 29.90%.

Those figures come from the Cameron County Elections Department's unofficial results.

The county's results contributed to statewide Democratic victories by Hinojosa and Talarico, according to the Texas Secretary of State's preliminary statewide returns.

Turnout figures remain preliminary

Cameron County's election reconciliation shows 103,859 ballots counted on election night, with additional ballots rejected or pending review.

Election officials noted that provisional ballots, mail ballots and further reconciliation could change the final figures.

The results offer an early measure of increased participation in Cameron County compared with the previous midterm election. Final turnout and vote totals will depend on the county's completed canvass.
